ISSUE 04: 1,000 SHEETS OF WORKING DRAWINGS: 3 WEEK SCHEDULE – 1 DAY MOBILIZATION

Projects with numerous variations – handled with ease

The homebuilder we were working with, ranked among the top ten in the US, had been our client for a couple of years. All our projects with them were in AutoCAD format. Each of their prototypical floor plans consisted of numerous variations, resulting in a complex system of xrefs and blocks. We had to ensure that regardless of the variation, every aspect looked perfect. Most of our work involved drawing from scratch, which made it easier to manage the database.

New project – addressing timeline requirement

One day, our contact from the company’s Los Angeles headquarters contacted us with an urgent assignment. They needed ten floor plans modified quickly. The working drawings were already completed, and rather than starting from scratch, they wanted us to make changes to the existing plans. This meant overhauling 1,000 sheets of someone else’s work. Our contact asked how long it would take to complete the task. At that time, we had six available AutoCAD workers. After assessing the workload, we estimated that it would take a couple of months to finish. However, their response was that they needed it done in just three weeks. This meant we would require a team of 20 people to meet the deadline.

Utilizing online connections to source qualified staff

Despite the challenging timeframe, we didn’t decline the assignment outright. Instead, I consulted with one of our team leaders to discuss potential solutions. He suggested searching the internet to gauge the availability of additional resources. Given our strong online connections with contract resources for Revit and AutoCAD, we quickly gathered relevant information. Within a day, we received 110 resumes, with around 30 candidates standing out as strong possibilities. After negotiations, we finalized deals with the top 14 candidates, accepted the assignment, and immediately began the work.

Successful and profitable project completion

With our expanded team, we dedicated ourselves to the project. Three weeks later, we successfully completed the assignment, meeting the homebuilder’s requirements. The client was satisfied with the results, and we were able to achieve profitability from the project.

Proven track record for success

This experience demonstrated our ability to respond swiftly to urgent and challenging requests. Through strategic use of online resources and prompt mobilization of additional team members, we effectively tackled the task of overhauling 1,000 sheets of working drawings within an ambitious three-week timeframe. Our commitment to delivering quality work in a timely manner contributed to the client’s satisfaction and our own success.
