ISSUE 05: 10 MANAGEMENT STAFF – 48 PROJECTS – STRATEGY & TACTICS

Downsizing Followed by Work Overload

In January 2021, I received a call from a Florida architect who identified himself as the CEO of an architectural firm that had downsized from 100 employees to only 10 management executives due to the pandemic and subsequent business contractions. These executives, though skilled in management, lacked proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD production. In January 2021, their firm was suddenly hit with 48 large apartment projects, leading to a critical resource shortage.

Assessing Collaboration

The architect reached out to me shortly after receiving a solicitation email from Archline. He explained that while he had the capacity to accommodate 15 additional workstations in his drafting room, he couldn’t find skilled personnel to fill those positions. Furthermore, his 10 executive architects lacked the necessary proficiency to handle the workload, even if they were trained in Revit and AutoCAD. Faced with limited options, he reluctantly considered working with Archline as a solution and proposed a test project to assess our
collaboration.

Testing and Expanding Collaboration

The test project involved a 200-dwelling unit garden apartment development in North Carolina. After signing a contract, we swiftly began working on the project. The architect was pleasantly surprised by our efficiency and quality of work. As a result, before we even reached the halfway point of the initial project, he entrusted us with another significant multi-family project, followed by additional assignments. Over the course of two years, we have successfully handled over two dozen projects
for this architect.

Flexible Strategic Partnerships

Our collaboration with this architect exemplifies the emerging trend in the twenty-first century, where projects are increasingly executed through flexible, project-based strategic partnerships. These partnerships are formed and dissolved based on the specific project requirements, instead of relying on monolithic, in-house teams.

Archline operates as an international network of highly skilled professionals who are educated, trained, experienced, and licensed in their respective jurisdictions. This approach allows us to adapt and mobilize resources quickly and efficiently to meet the needs of our clients.

Embracing the Future

As the industry continues to evolve, the writing on the wall suggests that larger projects will be executed through dynamic partnerships and distributed networks rather than relying solely on centralized, homogeneous organizations.

Archline is at the forefront of this shift, offering specialized services and expertise to architects, engineers, and general contractors facing challenges with their digital work, such as working drawings. If you find yourself in such a situation, please reach out to us. We will be delighted to discuss how Archline can assist you and provide the solutions you need.
